and
try for bottom fish. Those that did found dhuies and snapper among the usual
spread of other bottom species.
When
the swell is down the water clears up and the mackerel can see the lures and
come on the bite.
Tuna
are less fussy and can sometimes be caught in the green water, but it is always
best to fish the cleaner/clearer water,
which
is usually a bit further offshore.
LeisureCat Ultralight Kalbarri
Just held back this
newsletter for the results and pics from the LeisureCat Ultralight this
weekend.
The weather was great
but a strong easterly made it very uncomfortable out deep. After the big swell
last Monday, the water was a bit
green so we went out deep and got pounded, but it paid off with some good fish.
Ben had a big hook-up while anchored in 50m of water
& landed this estuary cod on 4kg line! It was more than
a metre long so had to be released.
He then got a good cobia on 4kg line that
went 8.96kgs
& I was very happy with my 6.9kg snapper on 4kg line and
a couple of cobia on top.
while Anna Sutherland won the 4kg line section with this mackerel that
went 9.44kgs.
The 6kg Winner was Lance Christie fishing from my 5.3m boat,
with runner up wife, Tania, holding her mackerel above that went 7.62kgs
Last year’s champion Nik Bramwell won the 3kg line section
with a broad-bar mackerel of 8.58kg.
I was lucky to land two mackerel on 3kg line on the last day
to win the Champion Adult Overall!
Junior Angler Extraordinaire
Young Finn Dethlefsen
is a lucky guy. His dad Scott, takes him fishing in his dinghy quite often and
has landed fish like this.
However this month he
and his dad got invited out for a recreational fish with me. He landed a
mackerel
and a small tuna
handling the rod and reel like he was born with it in his hands.
Gnaraloo Trip
A trip report from
Peter Holtfreter.
Hi Laurie, just an
update on our recent trip to Gnaraloo with your 2 boats for a week.
You know you are in
for a good trip when you pull out onto the beach to put the boats in and there
are 1000's of sea birds lined up all
along Gnaraloo bay. They're not there for the scenery!
My crew with an
assortment for the day and,
my 82yo father Brian with one of
the few yellow-fin that were caught during the week,
5 macs and 1 yellow-fin
tuna boated, plus we hooked and lost 3 small (2 - 2.5m) Black Marlin.
Weren’t geared up for
these little blighters so we unfortunately didn't get any to the boat, but they
sure put on a show to get the crew excited.
This was surprisingly
our worst day weather wise with a stiff 25knot southerly blowing and we sure glad
we
had decided to go
south and could come home with the sea at our backs.
Rest of the week’s weather just got better and better to the point where the last 2 days just glassed off.
Rest of the week’s weather just got better and better to the point where the last 2 days just glassed off.
Some years just
everything clicks and goes well, and compared to our previous 2 trips
up to Gnaraloo where we had serious trailer
issues with our own boat, the hire boats and trailers never gave us any
grief.
Daryl with his great cobia and Mark with a nice red
Pinkies seemed to
everywhere this year and mixed in with a good assortment of fish
including
red emperor, saddle-tails, robinson’s sea bream,
cobia, rankin cod and just about every
configuration of tuna, made for a memorable trip, as you can see by the photos
I have included.
Peter with a good rankin
cod
and red emperor.
Long Kalbarri Trip
Paul Long with mates
Mitch Lewis, Jake Lewis and Len McGoldrick hired the 6.5m boat from
the 7th -
10th this month cracking good weather and a hot bite.
Photos from his Gopro
camera.
Day 1 Jake with a
nice Spanish mac on a deep diving lure.
Followed by a nice
pink snapper, only bottom fish of the trip.
Day 2 Mitch with his
first mackerel for the trip!
Day 3: We had many strikes
in the morning but lost them all.
Then great skippering
from Paul landed Jake with the first of 4 fish on the boat! All mackerel.
Day 3 more good
skippering resulted in the first double hook up.
Jake with a spanish
mackerel and Mitch with a spotted mackerel.
Day 4 Len with one of
many mackerel.
Fish were hooking up
every 50 metres on the best of the fishing days!
Paul caught the only
tuna of the trip, no photo was taken just a video. The tuna was thrown back!
A lot of fish!
Brothers Nick and
Alex Rogers had blast late this month landing lots of fish from the 6.5m boat with
mates,
Lewis York, Todd
Richards, and Sean Hayes. The weather was great, overcast some of the time but
the fish
did not mind and they
all caught good fish.
Nick Rogers opened his account with a good mackerel.
and trolled up mackerel
and yellow-fin as well
Nick Rogers and Todd
Richards got club-nose trevally,
Nick also got a good snapper
and Lewis a
dhuie!
Sean Hayes was into
the mackerel while double hook-ups for Todd Richards Nick Rogers kept them
smiling.
Another mac for Todd Richards
Bite of the
Month
Each month I award Bite of the
Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
During the last LeisureCat Ultralight,
Ben Malton was fishing with 4kg line trying for a snapper or cobia
when he got this big bite. Fighting it for 30 minutes, it eventually
came up to the boat. It was more than 1 metre in length so had to be
returned. With a big release weight it went down again. Surprising
fish on 4kg line!
Kalbarri
Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
12th April 2014
Son Ben landed 3
striped tuna on 3kg line to win the senior game section while
Junior Harry
Waite landed this mackerel on 4kg line to win the Junior Section.
Frank
Rystenberg achieved a personal goal landing 8 species from the beach being tailor, whiting, cod, tarwhine, wrasse,
happy moments, morwong and a flathead. 8 fish is
the max that can be weighed in and each
species gets an extra 5 points, giving him a very
good points score.
Gary Ivey got a good mangrove jack from the river.
