MURCHISON BOAT HIRE MAY 2014 ELETTER
Some great fish again this month. It does help when the weather is good!
Easy to get right onto the spot over the fish, the anchor will hold and the fish usually co operate.
The business is changing and growing, getting busier and thoughts are turning to another boat, but I am
trying to resist that but I might just have to bite the bullet.
7.8m Boat now in Charter Survey
Due to the change in the governing body regarding boat licencing from a State Agency to AMSA which is Federal.
I can now use my boats in any way I want as long as they are surveyed for that use and registered on their data base as such.
This now means that I can use my 7.8m boat as a Charter Fishing Vessel, Work Boat, Hire & Drive and for Recreational.
I have bought a West Coast Charter Fishing Licence so we will be able to take small groups out fishing.
The skipper has to have a full Coxswain’s Ticket, which my son has so he will be doing the skippering.
I will be giving him the heads up on my best spots and methods, (which he already knows)
and we should be operating about mid-July.
Extended Weekend
Paul Youngman has fished from my boats a lot and brought a couple of mates up for a fish.
Tony Wheeler and son, Graham Wheeler had not caught many fish and not very big ones either and were thrown into the deep end
during the 3 days out in the 7.8m boat.

It started with a few big snapper for Tony;
Graham got a big sand snapper
and trolled up a surprise wahoo
on the way back. The water was green so was only expecting a lucky tuna, but the sight of this 9kg wahoo cutting
through the water at the boat was a sight for sore eyes!

The cobia were prolific. They landed 5 one day as well as a good estuary cod for Paul among all the big and small shark bust offs.
During the hot bite, Tony bust off on a fish right at the rod tip leaving 50 or so metres of line out there. 15 minutes later a
floating line was spotted next to the boat. It was gaffed and a fish was felt on the end. Quickly cutting his rig off, Paul tied
the loose end to his line and  took up the weight. It turned out to be the cobia in this photo!

A big baldchin groper made the day for Graham,
Paul got his coral trout after if got off at the boat
& started to swim back down, but a quick gaff shot brought it back!
Two dhuies were released waiting for the big one, which was either lost or did not bite.
There were a lot of sharks around and all had their arms lengthened a few times,
fish bitten in half and line lost over the weekend.

Hi Laurie.

Attached photos of John Slattery (in the boat) and his brother Robin with the cobia that Robin caught.
For the record we caught 30 plus mackerel and the cobia which is actually a lot better than recent years.
We are looking at a booking from 19 April to 1 May 2015 for “Bulawayo Buoy”.
Please pencil those dates.

Ningaloo Reef at its Best

Kevin Steel had the 7.8m boat for 14 days up Coral Bay/Exmouth way and landed some extraordinary fish.
A bit vague on the destination, but that is all I can tell you other than it was not at Ningaloo Station.
I don’t allow my boats to go to Ningaloo because there is no boat ramp and the road is too bad.

Most fish fell to soft plastics and they told me they had to move away from the golden trevally in the end
so that they could catch other fish!
These are quite big goldens! What a blast on soft plastics!

The bottom fish were good as well, big spangled emperor, big rankin cods
& a couple of chinaman cods made up the better bottom fish

GTs were caught using surface poppers at the back of the reef. Nice fish guys!

Mackerel and a coronation trout made up the variety of species they caught.

Bite of the Month
Graham Wheeler hooked up on this uncommon wahoo while trolling back from the days fishing.
Not expecting much in the green dirty water, this 9kg wahoo was very unexpected and much appreciated!
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
31st May 2014

Club member Ben Guest got a nice 5.3kg dhuie during the last comp

and Lui Palamara had one bite
all day on the beach landing this 12.6kg mulloway.

Ryley Storor fished with Ben above landing this very chunky baldchin groper of 6.3kgs.

April 2014

Email: bookings@murchisonboathire.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

Its been all tuna and mackerel this month. Anglers have found it difficult to leave them alone
and try for bottom fish. Those that did found dhuies and snapper among the usual spread of other bottom species.
When the swell is down the water clears up and the mackerel can see the lures and come on the bite.
Tuna are less fussy and can sometimes be caught in the green water, but it is always best to fish the cleaner/clearer water,
which is usually a bit further offshore.

LeisureCat Ultralight Kalbarri
Just held back this newsletter for the results and pics from the LeisureCat Ultralight this weekend.
The weather was great but a strong easterly made it very uncomfortable out deep. After the big swell last Monday, the water was a bit green so we went out deep and got pounded, but it paid off with some good fish.
Our team, Ben, Sue and I fished out of the 6.5m boat as the 7.8m was on hire for 2 weeks up at Coral Bay! Fishing in line classes,1kg, 2kg, 3kg, 4kg and 6kg, we elected to start with 4kg line.
Ben had a big hook-up while anchored in 50m of water
& landed this estuary cod on 4kg line! It was more than a metre long so had to be released.
He then got a good cobia on 4kg line that went 8.96kgs
& I was very happy with my 6.9kg snapper on 4kg line and a couple of cobia on top.
Sue’s cobia was landed on 3kg line,
while Anna Sutherland won the 4kg line section with this mackerel that went 9.44kgs.
The 6kg Winner was Lance Christie fishing from my 5.3m boat, with runner up wife, Tania, holding her mackerel above that went 7.62kgs

The only junior in the comp was Robbie Leck who did well landing fish on 2kg, 3kg and 6kg line winning all those line sections as well as the Champion Junior Overall, picking up 4 rods, 3 Charter Specials and a Tyrnos 8 for his troubles.
Last year’s champion Nik Bramwell won the 3kg line section with a broad-bar mackerel of 8.58kg.
I was lucky to land two mackerel on 3kg line on the last day to win the Champion Adult Overall!
Junior Angler Extraordinaire
Young Finn Dethlefsen is a lucky guy. His dad Scott, takes him fishing in his dinghy quite often and has landed fish like this.
However this month he and his dad got invited out for a recreational fish with me. He landed a mackerel
and a small tuna handling the rod and reel like he was born with it in his hands.
Gnaraloo Trip
A trip report from Peter Holtfreter.
Hi Laurie, just an update on our recent trip to Gnaraloo with your 2 boats for a week.
You know you are in for a good trip when you pull out onto the beach to put the boats in and there are 1000's of sea birds lined up all along Gnaraloo bay. They're not there for the scenery!

My crew with an assortment for the day and,
my 82yo father Brian with one of the few yellow-fin that were caught during the week,
Day 1 had us heading to some spots 20 km south and a slow troll down outside the sanctuary saw us arrive at our spots with
5 macs and 1 yellow-fin tuna boated, plus we hooked and lost 3 small (2 - 2.5m) Black Marlin.
Weren’t geared up for these little blighters so we unfortunately didn't get any to the boat, but they sure put on a show to get the crew excited.
This was surprisingly our worst day weather wise with a stiff 25knot southerly blowing and we sure glad we
had decided to go south and could come home with the sea at our backs.

Rest of the week’s weather just got better and better to the point where the last 2 days just glassed off.
Some years just everything clicks and goes well, and compared to our previous 2 trips up to Gnaraloo where we had serious trailer issues with our own boat, the hire boats and trailers never gave us any grief.

Daryl with his great cobia and Mark with a nice red
Pinkies seemed to everywhere this year and mixed in with a good assortment of fish

including red emperor, saddle-tails, robinson’s sea bream,
cobia, rankin cod and just about every configuration of tuna, made for a memorable trip, as you can see by the photos I have included.

Peter with a good rankin cod
and red emperor.

Long Kalbarri Trip
Paul Long with mates Mitch Lewis, Jake Lewis and Len McGoldrick hired the 6.5m boat from
the 7th - 10th this month cracking good weather and a hot bite.
Photos from his Gopro camera.
Day 1 Jake with a nice Spanish mac on a deep diving lure.
Followed by a nice pink snapper, only bottom fish of the trip.
Day 2 Mitch with his first mackerel for the trip!
Day 3: We had many strikes in the morning but lost them all.
Then great skippering from Paul landed Jake with the first of 4 fish on the boat! All mackerel.
Day 3 more good skippering resulted in the first double hook up.
Jake with a spanish mackerel and Mitch with a spotted mackerel.

Day 4 Len with one of many mackerel.
Fish were hooking up every 50 metres on the best of the fishing days!
Paul caught the only tuna of the trip, no photo was taken just a video. The tuna was thrown back!

A lot of fish!
Brothers Nick and Alex Rogers had blast late this month landing lots of fish from the 6.5m boat with mates,
Lewis York, Todd Richards, and Sean Hayes. The weather was great, overcast some of the time but the fish
did not mind and they all caught good fish.
Alex Rogers got this tuna and mackerel while
Nick Rogers opened his account with a good mackerel.
Lewis York landed long-tail tuna casting to bait schools with a twisty,
and trolled up mackerel and yellow-fin as well

Nick Rogers and Todd Richards got club-nose trevally,
Nick also got a good snapper
 and Lewis a dhuie!

Sean Hayes was into the mackerel while double hook-ups for Todd Richards Nick Rogers kept them smiling.
Another mac for Todd Richards

      Bite of the Month

Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
During the last LeisureCat Ultralight, Ben Malton was fishing with 4kg line trying for a snapper or cobia when he got this big bite. Fighting it for 30 minutes, it eventually came up to the boat. It was more than 1 metre in length so had to be returned. With a big release weight it went down again. Surprising fish on 4kg line!
Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.

12th April 2014

Son Ben landed 3 striped tuna on 3kg line to win the senior game section while
Junior Harry Waite landed this mackerel on 4kg line to win the Junior Section.

Frank Rystenberg achieved a personal goal landing 8 species from the beach being tailor, whiting, cod, tarwhine, wrasse,
happy moments, morwong and a flathead. 8 fish is the max that can be weighed in and each
species gets an extra 5 points, giving him a very good points score.
Gary Ivey got a good mangrove jack from the river.
