March 2014

A remarkable month again with amazing pelagic action. It has been almost nonstop tuna and mackerel
action combined with freakishly good weather. Those who bottom fished had equally as much luck with
plenty of dhuies, snapper and the likes.
A short flick rod tuna video
It has been like this all month.
Just cruise out to the tuna schools that have been erupting all month, (Look for the birds)
Troll or better still cast a small chrome slice through the commotion on a light flick rod
and hold on. Ben nearly got spooled on 20lb braid but we chased and got the line back.
Here is a short video of the landing.
Remarkable Jigs
Daniel Kwek has been hiring my boats for the last 10-12 years. A short break when he had his own boat and
Now, after selling it was back again hiring with some mates from Singapore. Almost exclusively
using jigs they had some remarkable catches over the 5 day hire.
3 of the days were kind of blown out, but on the last 2 days they got to the spots they
wanted and this is what they got!

Big estuary cod and dhuie for Daniel

Jay, Desmonte and Daniel with jigged up cobia and

Dave with one of the many dhuies kept and released.

A first for Kalbarri, a yellow emperor, for Dave and a snapper

And Roger with a big breaksea cod all on jigs.

Desmonte shows off his dhuie as well.
The sounder was red from seafloor to top water so they tried jigging mid water
which resulted

in tuna jigged up mid water for Roger.

Jay got into a few sambos and
even a red emperor for Dave.

Roger shows his dhuie and estuary cod both caught on slow fluttering jigs.
Even a big rankin cod fell for these metals.
I have since bought a couple and will be trialing them soon!

Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic
The Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic held at the beginning of the month was a great success especially as the weather was so good
and that there were an extraordinary amount of big tuna, small tuna, mackerel, cobia and even marlin and dolphin fish caught.

All 5 of my boats were entered in the comp, with Glen Dicarlo from Getaway Outdoors Bentley hiring one 6.5m boat
with Paul Youngman and my son Ben Malton aboard. They did well coming 3rd in their boat section and 4th overall.
They got into a lot of mackerel the last day and the tuna gave them a lot of curry.

The tuna ranged from 2kg footballs to 16kg heartbreakers.

Glen spent 2 plus hours on a tuna while
Paul was hooked up for 4 plus hours on 3kg line. They learnt a lot and that won’t happen again. (They say)

The other 6.5m and the 6.1m were out with a mixed group of mates

Colin Strydom, Bruce Henwood, Sean Lornie and Brendan Long were on the 6.5m boat and did well.
Colin got a big tuna and
Bruce had trouble with sharks but they all caught lots of fish ending up 5th in their boat section.
The 6.1m boat was crewed by George Campbell,
Tim Henwood, Chris Dodsley and Tony Morgan. For some it was their first time
light line fishing  so had a steep learning curve but all had fish.

The 5.3m boat was hired at the last minute by Lance and Tanya Christie together with  sons Lee and Des Christie.

They caught lots of fish, had a ball and ended up second knocking off a couple of local boats to boot!

We had a great comp on the 7.8m boat, Wife, Sue and John Hoye and myself started the first day trying to take out the
Highest Point Scoring Snapper. We each got a snapper and then went for mackerel and tuna.
John had the best snapper and won the prize and trophy for the HPS Snapper.

We got pulled piller to post with big tuna on 4kg and 3kg line eventually conceding to 6kg line an the last day as we were so
tired of long fights with tuna.
Sue had a great comp ending up 4th Champion Angler Game overall.
We also won our boat section and came 2nd overall.

Heaviest Dhuie was David Feragalli with a 9.02kg fish

while Heaviest Groper went to Wayne Salmeri at 5.67kg
The Highest Point Scoring Tuna was 11.88kg on 3kg line caught by Steve Wiseman.

Heaviest Snapper was Nik Bramwells 8.08kg specimen,

while Lui Palamara took out the river champion.
Murchison Boat Hire is a sponsor of the Classic as well as sponsoring the Top Gun Award each day.
I give away a 7.8m boat hire to the best game, bottom and river angler each day.
Brett Kielman and Kane De Grauw got theirs for game and river while Terry Ash won the bottom Top Gun

LeisureCat Ultralight Kalbarri
The next major club event. A game fishing only event with a maximum of 6kg line.
A great comp to learn more about light line game fishing when the weather is at its best and lots of fish around.
There are no secrets in this event, you ask and all is revealed, we are trying to encourage you to
learn and compete. There are special and additional lure packs for junior entrants.
All boats are booked already for the comp.
A line class gamefishing event in its second year.

      Bite of the Month
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
A rankin cod this size is very unusual in Kalbarri and getting it on a jig is a meritorious catch.
So well done to Roger who was over from Singapore fishing from my 7.8m boat this month.
Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
22nd March 2014

Harry Waite landed a pending Junior Game Fishing record with this 6.52kg yellow-fin tuna
landed on 3kg line during the local monthly comp this month.
He had a better one around 12kg on 3kg line last year but was not a member of ANSA
so was unable to claim that as a record.

Big red emperor and dhufish made up the catch for Ron Neumann and Daniel Tarasek.
