January 2014

  Email: bookings@murchisonboathire.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

The season has started with a bang with lots of fish landed and some really nice days this month despite it
being the windy time of year! The mackerel and tuna are back in force and in big numbers when
conditions are right and there have been an extraordinary large numbers of coral trout about.
Nearly every trip is resulting in a least one coral trout, mixed with a dhuie or more.

Big Day Out
Michael Palmer and 4 mates had a good day out in the 7.8m boat landing good fish.
A short troll resulted in nothing so they moved to a spot on the GPS just past Baldface which is about 20km north of
the river mouth.
Setting the anchor and a burley trail soon resulted in a couple of fish, and then Michael had a big
hook-up landing this big coral trout
and then followed up with a good dhuie..

Jason had a lot of fun landing good snapper, rankin cod and mulloway one after another!
Snapper & trout
Zoe Bremner, Vince, Andrew Bremner and Ashley Bremner had an excieting day out landing all sorts of fish early this month with Ashley landing a coral trout that made him wake up!

Cod Day Out
Scott Dryland with mates, Charles Nicholas, Jason Gouges and Carry Sandry had one of the 6.5m boats over the Christmas/New Year holidays,
catching cyclone Christine just as it was crossing the coast near Karratha. It was windy to say the least about the conditions
so he could not go all that far from the river mouth. However,
a couple of big cod for Scott
and a good estuary cod for Charles made the day.

Yellow-fin tuna day out
Bruce Henwood was up for a practice run for the Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic. Trolling 8kg line hooking up on a couple of tuna in the
12-15kg range, was a good intro as what to expect at the end of Feb. I was out the same day and shot some gopro.
See the results here.

Diving gets results

Son Ben was up in Kalbarri over the Christmas/New year break and is still here setting up a new business.
Diving on shallow reef around the Blue Holes area, he pulled these two big crays among other normal size crays.
    Fun few days
Nigel Syvertsen hales from South Australia and had the 6.1m boat out for a couple of days with his sons Ryan and Colby
and mate Ben Trezise. They got into a lot of fish and released everything. Anchoring over a spot near the Sand Patch

They picked up fish like this snapper for Ben,
Colby got a nice cobia
and a surprise hard fighting silver drummer.
It took him a while but Nigel got his yellow-fin tuna.
They had trouble with sharks
and Ryan got a gold-spot trevally.
    Big day out
Denia kssl, a German backpacker has been working in the Kalbarri Hotel pub and mentioned that
she has been here for 6 month and not done anything. Son Ben and Lisa invited her out so we went for a fish!
It was the first time she has been in a boat and first time fishing! Well she did not get seasick and she caught

fish like this tuna and dhufish,
got savaged by sharks and lost big fish that bust her off, bit, mangled and bent her hooks.
It was the best day of her life she said on facebook.
Ben got his biggest tuna to date
as well as a few cobia

Lisa did not enjoy the pain of fighting tuna, but felt better with her cobia that did not give her so much curry!
I made a video of the day out which came out very well, one of my better ones!

  Two days of big fish
Paul Garner with mates Frank Maynard, son Shay Maynard and Noraset Ton Charnchayasuk had a fantastic 2 days of good weather and big fish.
Selecting the 7.8m boat, they trolled up big yellow-fin tuna the first day as well as landing 9 dhuies.

They returned 7 of the dhues as only 2 per boat can be kept.
Frank was well pleased with his tuna
and for Shay, this was his first day out in a boat and biggest fish ever!
Paul got one as well!
Frank had the biggest dhuie, but Shay’s released one might have gone bigger! The second day was all about mackerel as they went to the mackerel
grounds towards the end of the southern cliffs. They had 13 hook-ups, landed 9 and released 5 mackerel.
Ton was pleased with his first mackerel
having caught his first tuna the day before.
Shay landed his first mackerel and this one was landed on his bream gear when an unweighted mulie was cast out during a mackerel hook-up.
Paul got the biggest mackerel of the 9 landed and his dhuie was not bad either!

Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Bite of the month goes to Shay Maynard. First serious trip out in a boat and landing a fish like this.
Great effort for Shay who fought this yellow-fin tuna to the boat by himself.
The following day he landed his first mackerel and also one with his bream rod and reel using a unweighted mulie
cast out the back of the boat during another mackerel hook up.

Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
18th Jan 2014

Ron Neumann landed a nice estuary cod during the last comp
and Steve Wiseman got a mackerel on 3kg line
I got an unusual for Kalbarri. This bat fish was hanging around the boat so I dropped it an unweighted squid head.
It was quite fussy, but took it in the end!
